Becoming a Christian by accepting Jesus

Becoming a Christians is one of the most natural things to want to do.  This is because becoming a Christian is about recognising that the God who created us wants to live in relationship with us and accepting the forgiveness and acceptance that He offers.

The reason that we so often find it hard to become a Christian is that we choose to rebel against God and so the relationship between creation and creator is broken.  Because God is a god of justice as well as a god of love and mercy, the punishment that this deserves is none other than death. However, in an amazing reversal of roles God sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to the world to die in our place on a cross, a torture method used by the Romans at the time. However, unlike anyone before or since, after Jesus had died and been buried for three days he came back to life again.

A Christian is someone who acknowledges that the only way for a restored relationship with God is through faith in Jesus' sacrifice and wants to let Jesus take over control of their life.  The concept of letting someone else take over the control of your life sounds risky.  Letting Jesus direct your life certainly can sometimes be risky but the Holy Spirit of Jesus is often referred to as 'a perfect gentleman' who will never force himself onto anyone and always allows you to say 'no'.  But once you have let the creator of the world direct your life, why settle for anyone else?

If you want to become a Christian and let Jesus into your life then you may want to pray the following prayer:

Heavenly Father God,

I recognise that in the past I have wanted
to run my life in my own way.
I have sinned and not always
 lived up to your standards.

I am sorry and want to turn away
 from my old ways
and let you run my life.

Thank you that you sent Jesus to die for me
and that because you raised him back to life
I can be forgiven and accepted.

Please send your Holy Spirit into my life
so that I can live for you from now on.

Amen
